Oyster shell should not be used as grit since it is too soft and does not aid in grinding. In addition, growing chickens have a lower calcium requirement, and too much calcium can adversely affect their kidneys. Grit should also be provided to pastureraised chickens. Grit is important for breaking down the grass chickens consume.
Some folks like oyster shell added to give poultry calcium. Other folks would rather have the calcium in the feed not the grit. I use the grit for my succulent plants, which like an acidic rough growing medium. Oyster shell added would make the growing medium alkaline, so I like this particular grit for the fact that it's just plain pure granite.
