This study was carried out on reclaimed coal mine spoils in one of the largest surface opencast mining areas (SonepurBazari) in the Eastern Coalfield Limited Raniganj, India. The study area is located between latitudes 23°40′00″N and 23°43′06″N Longitude 87°11′14″E and 87°17′42″E.

Therefore, displacement of villages along with their long standing economic, social, religious, and cultural activities is inevitable. When coal occurs in land held traditionally by indigenous people, mining gives rise to question of social justice.
The mine is currently producing 14 Mt of coal per annum. Sonepur Bazari project of Eastern Coalfields Limited is located in the eastern part of Raniganj Coalfields. Four coal seams, RIV, RV, RVI and RVII, are mainly exposed in the mine. Presently, seams RV and RVI are being extracted by opencast method of mining.
